SINGERSKELLY DICKSON
Kelly Dickson achieves a warm, naturally rich tone which brings joy to swinging, upbeat numbers and beauty to heart-felt jazz ballads. In October 2003 Kelly travelled to New York to record her debut album Vocal Point. The album features some of New York's finest jazz musicians: Gene Perla - double bass, John Riley - drums, Tim Harrison - piano and George Garzone - tenor sax. Widely respected pianist Nikki Iles accompanied Kelly on two tracks later recorded in London. Kelly has worked hard to reach the most exciting point in her career so far. Born in Northern Ireland and raised in the north of England, from an early age she knew that she was going to make a career in music and was taking lessons by the age of ten. By 17, she was already recording studio sessions singing mostly dance music and this led to a record deal with Polydor. At 21, Kelly discovered a love for jazz. The Kelly Dickson Quintet quickly became frequent and popular performers on the northern jazz circuit. Kelly has sung at many jazz festivals and the BBC invited her to record live sessions for Radio Leeds. Kelly is now based in London, and in 2002 graduated with a degree in Jazz Studies from Middlesex University. She has become an established and popular singer in the capital. She has performed at many London venues including the Pizza Express - Dean Street, Jazz Café Camden, Pizza on the Park, The Bluejay Jazz Club, Shinos, Smollensky's on the Strand, The National Theatre Foyer, 606 Club, The Spice of Life and Googlies Jazz Club. She also currently holds a residency with her seven-piece funk band Mamafeelgood at the Wardrobe in Leeds. Kelly has been praised for her imaginative repertoire and is fast gaining a reputation as one of the finest jazz/soul singers on the British music scene. She has recently been writing and recording on the ‘Players’ second album, a band consisting of respected musicians Steve White, Damon Minchella, Mick Talbort, Ken and Carl Papenfus, this album is due to be released in June 05. "A highly individual, mature voice with very subtle power that creeps up on you" -Jamie Cullum "I heard three notes and I was hooked." - George Garzone "Kelly Dickson is sparkling! She is full of life and swing-the very essence of jazz!"- Tina May "Kelly Dickson has a feel for jazz articulation." - Jack Massarick, Evening Standard, UK "When you first see Kelly, you'll want to see more of her. Then, when she begins to sing, you'll want to keep hearing as much as you can." - Gene Perla "Whatever you do, don't miss Kelly...singers with her talent don't come around very often. She has a great feeling and exuberance for the music, combined with a lovely voice with wonderful intonation" "I recently had the great pleasure of seeing and hearing Kelly Dickson perform with Steve White's band The Players, and was knocked out by her singing ... just as everyone else was in the packed London club. Be sure to check her out; she's a talented and vivacious vocalist!" - Peter Erskine |
