Jonathan Johnston, born in Co Down Northern Ireland is one of the leading flutists of his generation. He studied under the the late William Dunwoody MBE before furthering his studies with Colin Fleming. There, after gaining an unconditional scholarship to study flute with Professor Peter Lloyd at the Royal Northern College of Music, where he graduated with a BMus (Hons) degree in Performance. He continued studies privately with Sir James Galway who continues to maintain a great influence on his career.

His mix of the French style and Bel Canto is distinctively known to many. His impeccable virtuosic technique and instantly recognisable tone are a derivative of the French school of playing.

He has been awarded much prestige: Winner of the Irish Musician of the Year, The youngest ever finalist in the Albert Cooper International Flute Competition, Princes trust scholarship, and the Ian Gow Memorial scholarships to name a few.

Performances have taken him to Concert Halls across the globe playing with esteemed orchestras such as the Ulster, London Symphony, Halle, City of Birmingham, Royal Philharmonic and the Berlin Radio Symphonies respectively. He has played solo flute under such batons as George Hurst, Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, Hans Werner Henze and Henry Duttileux. Recital engagements have also extended the globe including a recent performance at the Leeds International concert series and NFA flute convention in Washington DC.

Jonathan Johnston music is often broadcast on the radio and on TV stations including the BBC. His playing can also be heard on many sound tracks. He has recorded five albums from classical to crossover repertoire encompassing many different styles and genres.

Orchestral chairs and freelancing include Northern Irish Chamber Orchestra, Halle Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Pops Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and Ulster Orchestra.

Jonathan is also currently furthering his studies as a conductor with mentors Kenneth Montgomery OBE, Mikhail Jurowski and Valery Gergiev.
