ANTHONY HEWITTAnthony Hewitt

Anthony, born in England, has firmly established himself as one of his generation’s leading pianists. He studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School in London with Seta Tanyel and Louis Kentner, and after being accepted on a full-tuition scholarship at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia with Leon Fleisher and Claude Frank, he went on to win prizes at prestigious international piano competitions, which include joint-winner of the William Kapell competition in Washington DC, prize winner at the International Schubert Competition, special prize at the ARD Munich Competition, winner of the NFMS/ESSO Young Concert Artists Award, and the recipient of a Hattori Foundation grant in 1997 and 1998. He also received a performance award from the Mannes College of Music in New York, where he studied with pianist and scholar Edward Aldwell, and appeared at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie in 1999. These successes led to many engagements in the USA and in Europe, the New York Times describing him as an "excellent pianist, showing impressive clarity, fleet technique and a wide range of tonal colours", and the Badische Nachrichten praising him for his “musical authority, beauty of tone, and youthful virtuosity”.

Anthony has made four successful appearances at Wigmore Hall in London, and after his debut there in 1998, Musical Opinion hailed his performance as "astounding... wonderfully moving", and he was subsequently described in the Times as an "outstanding pianist". He has also performed chamber music at Wigmore Hall and the South Bank Centre in London, and at the Lincoln Centre in New York.

Anthony Hewitt has delighted audiences across the U.S.A., Japan (UK Festival 98), Russia, Germany, France, Austria, and in Britain, as recitalist, chamber musician, and soloist with the National Symphony under Herman Michael, Princeton Symphony Orchestra under Mark Laycock, the Saratov and Kaliningrad Orchestras in Russia as well as with many orchestras throughout the UK, including the Northern Sinfonia under Jonathan Del Mar. His debut CD was released in 1999 under the Master Musicians label, and another pioneering the virtuosic sonata of Reubke.

Anthony is currently living in London, and since making it his base since 1998, collaborates with such distinguished artists as Levon Chillingirian, Alexander Chaussian, Paul Watkins and Matthew Trussler. He has taken lessons from Alfred Brendel, who described him as "a young pianist of remarkable talent".
