GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA
The Glenn Miller Orchestra UK was formed in 1988 in conjunction with Glenn Miller Productions of New York. The Glenn Miller Orchestra UK has maintained the exact line-up on stage devised by Glenn, consisting of the leader, five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones and three rhythm plus a male and female vocalist. The singers perform both individually and as part of The Moonlight Serenaders vocal group. The Uptown Hall Gang - an outstanding Dixieland group drawn from members of the orchestra is also featured. The Band's library comprises of more than 200 scores, many of them from the original library, which includes the great arrangements from both the civilian and Army/Air Force orchestras. The library features contributions from the world's greatest arrangers including Jerry Grey, Billy May and Bill Finnegan. Ray McVay (Director) Ray's career took off when he became Musical Director for Larry Palmes, the Rock 'n Roll impresario. Following on from his days touring with the band, he accepted a new challenge when Eric Morley, Head of Mecca, asked him to join his organisation with his own show band with which he worked in Glasgow, Edinburgh and the Hammersmith Palais in London, before headlining at Mecca's top venue, the Lyceum Ballroom in the Strand. There followed twelve years on Come Dancing, winning almost a dozen Carl Alan Awards for 'Best Ballroom Dance band Leader'. However, his heart was always with the Big Bands, and he yearned to direct the music of Glenn Miller. The initial idea to form a British Glenn Miller Orchestra came with one principal aim in mind. Having heard various bands play Glenn Miller type music he was disappointed when their phrasing, tuning and arrangements were not correct so he decided to contact Glenn Miller's American Office with the idea of forming a Glenn Miller Orchestra in the U.K. and was invited to New York to discuss plans. Within six months the Glenn Miller Orchestra (U.K.) had taken to the road in Britain. Its success took everyone by surprise. The Spring of '99 saw the band commence their first trip to Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay and then in the Autumn they were off to Miami on the Q.E.2. performing all the way! This is just another step in keeping the name alive ... Glenn Miller. |
